The Unknown Hero?

Since it's pretty much a lock that we'll be getting a Wii, I've been thinking about Guitar Hero III. More specifically, the song list for it. Of the 60+ confirmed songs (according to the Wikipedia entry), I think I only recognize 14. Pretty sure I've never even heard about 40 of them. Kind of dampens the enthusiasm.

I've been trying to think of songs that: A) I've heard; B) I like; and C) have a good guitar presence. So far, all I've come up with is:
"I Love Rock 'n' Roll" by Joan Jett
"Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor
pretty much anything by Aerosmith (other than the song I don't recognize that's already on the list), Clutch, the Meat Puppets, or the Offspring.

Anyone have suggestions for GH4?

I very much agree with that assessment of GH3. Legends of Rock? Really? So where is Hendrix (Voodoo Child), Led Zeppelin, Metallica (???), Deep Purple, Queen (???), Duran Duran (okay, that's just for me), Def Leppard, Funkadelic, Cream, AC/DC, The Clash...

And of all the Sonic Youth songs...Kool Thing? Ugh.

this version was grossly mistitled. Should have been Guitar Hero III: If you haven't mastered the songs from GHII by now, you can finally give up!

Okay, I take it back. Cream and Metallica are on there. Except it's One. Bo-ring.

Now that I see it again, I'm a little more excited. Still, how do the following qualify as "Legends":

AFI, Bret Michaels Band, Kaiser Chiefs, Lacuna Coil, Eric Johnson, Backyard Babies???

I know just over half of the listed songs. Perhaps that makes a not-too-flattering statement about my taste in music, but oh well. I don't mind anyway. I'd never heard "Tattooed Love Boys" by the Pretenders or "Dead" by My Chemical Romance before getting GHII, and now I absolutely adore them both.

As to the "Legends of Rock" thing, well, if they called it "Guitar Hero III: Featuring a Couple Legends of Rock" it might be more accurate, but it wouldn't be very rock 'n' roll.

Oh, and unfortunately "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" was already on Guitar Hero I.

OK then, how about "Blue Orchid" by The White Stripes?

I'm guessing the entry from Wik includes the unlockable songs which have traditionally been far more small band that you haven't heard of. Only about 40 of the songs would be the ones you'd maybe know... I found the songs I didn't know by title I often recognized when I heard them. Just some thoughts.

totally agree with pusher on Dead. I bought that album, feeling like a conforming non-conformist 14 year old when I bought it, but who cares.

Both AK47 and Matt have repeatedly tried to master that lame iron maiden song every time they've come over to play. At least it's better than that weak suicidal tendency track.

anyhow...one last non seq. I'm pumped for Cherub Rock. the next best thing to Union of the Snake or The Reflex.

okay, this has nothing to do with gh3. remember your post about transformers being one big ad. well, I just got Transformers on dvd (rainbow foods had put out the display three days early, illegally, to my advantage). anyhow, the insert was an ad for, guess what, a yellow GM camaro. It made me instantly think of your tirade against the long GM commercial that is Transformers (as I am about to learn), and agree just a little. a lot, actually. I like my DVD inserts to tell me about chapters, stories about production, etc. I already knew chevy sold yellow camaros. I've been to Maui, where nearly 3/4 of all such camaros have been sold.

anyhow, I'm on your side, at long last.
