When you walk into a store in the later part of the evening, don't you usually have some vague awareness of the time? And perhaps even some curiosity about the closing time of said store?
It seems that about 1 in 50 people lack one or both of these traits. I especially don't understand the people who, when told that the store is closed (already after closing time), ask to continue shopping -- or even simply state that they are going to look around some more.
This is my newest favorite: guy comes into the gourmet section, perusing the items in the candy/chocolate aisle, where I am working. I ask if he needs any help. He replies, "No, I'm in here all the time -- I know the food section better than you." I continue working, and he asks me if I could recommend any chocolate (bars). I point out a few that I've tried and liked, and he says "Yeah, I really like the dark chocolate. I'm going to go with this one." And what does he pick up? A fucking MILK chocolate bar. Definitely a vague awareness there.
I guess, even at the end of a long day dealing with these people, when my feet are sore and I'm burned out, I still know I'm better than them.

Hee hee! I hope that guy got home, realized the bar was milk chocolate, and had some inkling of just how much you must have been laughing at him.
Nothing destroys your faith in humanity quite like retail. I sometimes wonder if the liquor store was better or worse than something like where you work. I could at least assume they had already had a few.
I think it would be funny if he was lactose intolerant and couldn't even eat the wrong bar o'choco he grabbed from the shelf.
