Turkey, Stuffing, and Kimchi

APEC is over, and Tahra and I have returned to Seoul. Just over 3 weeks until we leave Korea, and just under 2 weeks until all of our stuff is packed up and shipped back to the States.

It’s been a good run here, and Korea has begun to feel like home, but it will be nice to be back to our real home. Other than seeing family and friends, it will be nice just to catch up on U.S. culture – I feel so disconnected from current music, movies, and fashion (well, we all know I have my own impeccable sense of fashion, but it’d be good to see what the chumps are wearing). Will I still be able to laugh at shoppers of the Gap and Abercrombie & Fitch? We shall see!

Are all of our friends going to be toting iPods and cell phones? Pretty sure many of you were not when we left.

Though I may be wrong on many counts (I’ve been away a long time!), I make these predictions:

(Since September 2003, unless otherwise stated)

  • Among my MN pals, my collection of business suits has grown the most (from 2 to 8 + 1 tuxedo).
  • Among my MN pals, my music collection (CDs) has grown the least (3 regular CDs and 3 double-CDs).
  • I read the fewest number of books (1 completed, and another 450+ pager that I started in January 2004 and still haven’t finished).
  • I took the largest number of photographs (3,350 – give or take several that were of poor quality and were deleted).
  • We had more trips to a car repair place than Karen and/or Forest.
  • I’ll be able to eat an enchilada (or other spicy food) made by Forest with little or no discomfort.
  • I’ll be able to beat Shane Bohnen at a new (Korean) game – mostly because the rules are so confusing.
  • Though it is aging (purchased in 2000), our desktop computer is still newer than Aaron Koelman’s.

Well, we’ve only got this weekend and next to sort through everything for pack-out on Monday the 5th. Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving! I'm guessing we had the most kimchi at our table...

Stacey... Stacey... hmm. Do I know a Stacey? Perhaps she stumbled onto my blog semi-randomly? Would like to know. In any case, Stacey, thanks for the kind words. :-)

Pfft. I would totally call you on the car repair thing, except I'm not sure if you're willing to count Luther as a car repair place. Actual, official garage? Yeah, you've probably got me beat. But if I get to include all the times I had to call up Luther and say "Um. Yeah. My car died in the Target parking lot again. Yes, again. Really." I bet I'd win.

Still, considering the relative ages and conditions of our cars, you would get the moral victory, I think.

I don't have an iPod or a cell phone. Or a business suit. And my Thanksgiving dinner did not involve kimchi. (Of course, it also didn't involve turkey...) You know me. I'm dull and very happily stuck in a rut. Pretty much exactly as you left me. :-)

Anyway, I'm so excited that your homecoming can be measured in weeks! YAY!!!

Nostradamus you are not, but I think you may be right on all accounts 'cept one! (AK may have ya beat on the PC)

But the real question when it comes to car repair is how many times have you had to take your car to the garage to get the Oxygen sensor reset because it got confused when you left a polluted big city to drive in the countryside? Hmmm?

Well, I think we can give partial credit for calls to Luther. Maybe 5 calls = 1 official garage visit? I dunno. ;-)
