How Low Can They Go?
While perusing the newest selection of DVDs at the PX today, I noticed a new version of Hwa San Go (Volcano High). This is a Korean martial arts movie that attained cult status here a few years back. Anyway, this new MTV version, for American audiences, "features" the voices of several hip-hop stars (presumably the dubbed voices, but that's not entirely clear from the packaging): Snoop Dogg, Andre 3000, Big Boi, Method Man and others.
All I could think is "why?"
I just can't picture Snoop Dogg's oily voice coming from a Korean, especially just before he's about to fly through the air and kick some ass.
Fortunately, they included the original Korean version, but why couldn't they just leave it at that? Why did they have to mess with it?

I saw that at Target just last weekend! I don't think you're giving the played-out hip hop community enough credit for their voice talents. I think Andre 3000 and Slick Rick will be doing the new version of the Last Unicorn, featuring the living remnants of the Fat Boys.
I thought it was weird, too. Not necessarily low, per se. The original dubbed voices weren't exactly straight outta Broadway. Of course, I didn't think of "You just love my doggystyle" when listening to the dialogue.
Meh...I guess Volcano High underwhelmed me, anyhow. It doesn't get truly good until the last half hour, and even then it's not as good as it could have been. So I wasn't bothered so much. Do that to my Fist of Legend, Battle Royale or Shaolin Soccer and I'll pull down a display or two.
