D-What woke me up at 7:20 this morning (not too horrible; my alarm was set to go off at 7:35, but I was surly nonetheless) to announce that we had gotten our adoption referral. I trundled downstairs groggily after a few minutes, where she was making Skype calls to announce the referral of twin girls and downloading all the files attached to the e-mail.
While she was talking with her mom, I looked over some of the files and noticed one had a photo in the corner. D-What came in and said "that looks like a boy." Sure enough, the gender was marked with a big 'M'. Holy crap, it's twin boys. Up for adoption in China.
So the rest of today was spent sharing the news with friends and co-workers (family were the first to know), and trying to go about a normal day of work with our minds still reeling from the realization that it's boys, not the girls we had so certainly expected.
On the way home we splurged and picked up a bottle of Piper-Heidsieck, and then shared the news with our ayi, who was in the process of making dinner. D-What summed up the exchange thusly:
D-What: Ayi, we got great news today! We heard we will be adopting boys!
Ayi: You should adopt a girl, not a boy.
D-What: We don't have a choice, the government chose these kids. They are twin boys!
Ayi: Twins! What's wrong with them? How is their health?
D-What: They are fine. (I proceed to show the pictures and reports.) The paperwork says they are healthy.
Ayi: The one looks good. The other is fat. Girls are better. You really should get a girl. They treat their mothers better.
D-What: Maybe, but we have boys now.
Ayi: Well, so long as they are healthy. That's the most important. I wonder (doubt) if they are healthy. You'll need a second ayi now!
D-What: Yes, we need an ayi that can come every day (trying to hint that we only want one).
Ayi: Well, I can help you find an additional ayi.
Good times.
