Partial Progress

The Housing Board reviewed our second housing appeal on Thursday, and somewhat surprisingly, voted to approve it. Even more surprisingly, they voted to reassign us to a townhouse in the housing compound that seems to the first choice among embassy families.
So, that's cool. But, they approved it as a "personal" appeal, meaning we have to pay for the move. Which is stupid, because the need to move was mostly brought on by quality issues with the construction of our current apartment: the plaster is cracking and falling off of the walls, they have to chop through the ceiling in two places to access embedded air conditioner units that need to be replaced, the kitchen counter top is plastic and has cracked completely through in a number of places and must be replaced, as well as numerous other less severe (but no less annoying) problems.
We were told that the Board "didn't want to set a precedent" (what precedent, I'm not sure) or ask the property management to "do the embassy a favor" (which I also don't understand, because the embassy wasn't going to have to pay -- it was either going to be the property management or us paying, so I don't see how making the property management pay would be doing the embassy a favor).
So: yay - we get to move out of this dump. But: boo - we have to pay to move when it's not our fault. We'll find out this week how much the moving company estimates the move to cost.

Ouch. Movers aren't cheap. But hooray for not only getting reassigned, but getting such a coveted spot!
