One of the things that post management said to D-What at a meeting about my blog/work situation was that they understood that my forced resignation could affect her desire to continue to serve at this post. And they were right -- it's one of many factors that have made this assignment so trying.
Well, she heard from her boss that management -- despite claiming to understand the negative impact the situation has on our morale -- will not support a request to curtail this assignment, if we choose to do so.
So basically they're saying "We know our actions have made it even worse for you, but we won't let you leave. Oh, and keep up the good work (D-What only)."
Apparently they think my blog posts indicate "dissent" that the Chinese could use to "recruit" me somehow. Like hell. I'm not going to side with the people who built our crappy apartment and make daily life irritating at best. I would like nothing more than to escape back to the good old U.S. of A. Hopefully our home leave this summer will provide some solace.
Other developments: I suspect that someone reported my blog to management, as it had gone unnoticed for many months, until I linked it to Facebook. Anyway, I was at a friend's place the other night, and the suspected snitch was also there. When she commented that she hadn't seen me around the embassy lately and asked when I was moving to HR, I told her I wasn't working any more. Her response was not the expected "Oh? Why is that?" but rather: "Was that voluntary?" I thought that was an awfully strange choice of words.
The conversation quickly shifted to how not going to HR was a good decision because the consensus was that HR is not a good place to work, so I didn't get a chance to elaborate on my situation. But, it was a movie night hosted by our good friend so I didn't want to say anything to upset the mood. Anyway, I'm pretty sure she's involved in some way.

Wogsy, I think you are 100% correct in your assessment. The government (like many huge employers) always checks out its employees by looking for public information on the internet. You've been cognizant about keeping your name off of your blog.
How did this person come to know you had a blog in the first place? Was your FB protected to just friends?
Anyhow, the "was that voluntary" question is a weird response. Inappropriate for one, nosy for two, and skips a step or two in between that virtually everyone else would take. I'm guessing you have good reason to be suspicious.
I'm very sorry this has happened. If you want to talk more about it, just write me an email.

You're a very considerate guest. I think I would have found it very difficult to not say anything that might "upset the mood," as you so mildly put it.
For fuck's sake, it's not like you had anything that bad on your blog anyway, IIRC. Just general blowing off steam/stress complaints that are perfectly normal given your situation, and certainly not a worrisome amount of even that.
The response to Mixologist just makes everything worse. "Hey, welcome to your hostile environment, have a nice stay." Grrr.
