I also find it strange that restaurants here frequently are out of many Chinese beers, even though they could send someone next door or across the street to any number of liquor stores to temporarily re-stock. I may need to start carrying a can or two of my own around.
Near a Chinese-run Korean restaurant we tried out recently (at which all of the above happened), one can also find this little gem of construction:

I just marvel at the thought process(es) that led to building a wall directly on top of several manholes. Apparently the manholes were just put down for decoration, or something, since they certainly aren't being used.
Nothing more in terms of news. I'll keep my eyes and ears open, and try to remember to take a camera with me whenever I'm out and about.

Aren't manhole covers just like the chalk line to mark where to put walls?
I don't think I'm going to cope very well with the restaurants when we come visit.
Can't wait to see some of this local charm in person though!
p.s. What is that a picture of in your header bar?
The picture in the new header bar is a cropped portion of a shot I took inside the Seven Star cave in Guilin, China. The drip-formed shapes are illuminated with colored lights.
The construction thing that drove me most nuts in China was the "scaffolding". Might as well put a bunch of people up on drinking straws.
