Cadavers and Web Comics

You know, "cadaver" is kind of a hard word to type. All on the left hand, with the pointer finger going all crazy to hit that C, V, and R. Now, before you get weird ideas about why I'm typing about cadavers, there's a miniature in the newest DDM set that's called a Cadaver Collector.

Anyway, I wanted to talk a little bit about East Coast greetings and traffic spacing. Out here, it seems that "How are you?" is a standard greeting. That's fine, but to me that's a question, and questions usually beg a response. So, when I say "Hi" and the other person says "How are you?" I answer. Usually, people out here look at me with an expression like "why are you starting a conversation with me?" To me, they started it with the question.

I don't know if it's a Midwest thing or what -- so I pose the question to my pals there (or anyone who cares to answer): do you interpret "How are you?" as just another generic greeting that requires no response, interchangeable with "Hi" and the like, or is it a question that requires an answer?

Another weird thing out here is the space people leave (or don't leave) between cars. While driving at 75 MPH in a 55 zone down the freeway (everyone drives at least 10 MPH over the speed limit here), people seem to like to leave a car length or less. I'm guessing they just don't want another car to squeeze in there at those speeds. When I leave more space, with which I feel comfortable, someone invariably fills it in. Of course, I'm used to that from living in Seoul, but in Seoul your top speed is in the range of 25-35 MPH. What I really don't get is that people around here leave HUGE spaces between cars when they're stopped. Waiting at an intersection, you'll see 2-3 car lengths of space between cars. Makes me wonder if they think they're compensating for tailgating so horribly while in motion.

Just some food for thought.

And, if you're bored (especially at work), I suggest you check out the following amusing places:
The Order of the Stick
and
HomestarRunner.net ("it's dot com!") -- especially the games "Trogdor," "Thy Dungeonman," "Peasant Quest," and "Thy Dungeonman 3." Good times.

I've run into various people over the years that do that question not wanting an answer thing. What's up? I think is the more midwest version. They always look at me funny when I respond... or maybe that's not why.

I've always thought it needed a response. "Good. How are you?" is enough of a response. Though there was one guy I used to work with that never waited for a response, now that I think about it. But I haven't traveled much or lived anywhere other than the Midwest. And "What's up?" -- I'd respond to that too.
