Observations from this first week:
1) I forgot how big a chunk of the day full-time jobs take up. There’s nothing left for me! And, how slowly time can pass while at work. Zzz…
2) I have the largest office space I’ve ever had in a job. It’s a good 10’ x 10’ cube with high walls and couple of windows. People can actually come in and sit down on the other side of the desk!
3) The housing handbook includes a “translation” of gas marks for your stove/oven, with several predictable entries like “cool,” “moderately hot,” and “very hot” as well as the more dubious “very moderate.”
4) Strange issues with the admin section here continue, this time with multiple instances (spread over the week) of the computer people failing to give me access to system resources required for my job. Some of the issues are still not resolved, and as it stands right now the locally employed staff members have higher access than I do.
5) I am only now making more than I was at Northern Tool & Equipment (almost 10 years ago!).
6) I have a feeling this job will make me even more unhappy with our housing once I confirm that we got the worst of what's available.
Just gotta keep telling myself "Money is good. Job means money."

Can you use your new found power/information to get a transfer to better digs? 'Cuz that could make it all worthwhile!
Alas, no. Housing relocation requires proof of adverse conditions - medical or security or similar. Technically, we could put in a request to move, but without such justification we'd have to pay for it ourselves, which would be around the $5K mark.
