Eye for an Eye, Tooth for a Tooth

I'm making my annual visit to the dentist this Saturday. I actually wish it was a bi-annual visit (what can I say? I like knowing my teeth are clean and in good condition), but unlike my dentist office back in MN, the Korean ones don't send out reminder postcards and so it ends up slipping closer to a year between visits.
I suppose that's just as well, since the last time I was at the dentist in MN, they told me my teeth were in good shape (*blushes* Well, they do exercise daily...) so that a yearly visit would be enough.

And now, as I approach the end of my tenure in Public Affairs, I am considering other medical procedures. I guess technically it's surgery and not merely a "procedure," but I understand that LASEK may be a good option for me. I was turned down for LASIK back in '01 (thanks to the caring, ethical doctor who wasn't just out to grab $2K from every comer) because of my too-thin corneas, but it seems like this LASEK is a possibility for us cornea-thickness challenged individuals.

Still, it scares the bejeezus out of me to think that: 1) something would be slicing my eyes; and 2) there is a possibility (however small it may be, it's still a possibility) that I could lose my vision because of complications. It'd really suck to have my eyes implode, like the doctor said they'd do if I had the LASIK surgery.

Still again, how wondrous it would be to wake up and be able to see clearly without glasses or contact lenses! How great it would be to be able to wear "normal" sunglasses again! And how sexy I'd look! I've required corrective lenses since second grade, so it's been a good 23+ years (more than 75% of my life!) that I've had them.

I wonder how long it will be until they start offering vision "upgrades" -- infrared, x-ray, etc. I'd spring for some of those!

Wow! I hadn't heard about that one. I may have to check it out since I was in the same boat as you. I'd say you should at laest go to an apointment and ask about the risks and see how comfortable you feel.
Best of luck on your decision.
